About Us
Loaves and Fishes for St. Louis began when Drs. Donald and Dorothy Femmer welcomed a homeless man into their home and shared a simple meal—an act that inspired Dorothy’s vow that no one would ever leave hungry again. On January 13, 1982, that compassion became a mission: to provide emergency food and support to those in need, guided by Christian love and service.
In 1997, a devastating fire destroyed much of the facility, but through faith and community support, Loaves and Fishes reopened stronger than ever.
Today, the organization serves over 15,000 people annually, providing emergency shelter, food assistance, and comprehensive programs that include case management, life skills development, financial education, and support for housing and employment—empowering individuals and families toward lasting stability.
